On June 28th, 2007, we walked into Brody School of Medicine. We were so nervous! First, we met with a Genetics Couselor. She walked us threw our family medical history, which we found that there wasn't anything that could have been genetically passed to Lilly. She discussed all the different types of genetic disorders. There is Trisomy 18, Trisomy 13, and Downsyndrome. I kept thinking that, it could never happen to us.. never. After talking to the Genetics Counselor, we had an ultrasound.. which seemed to take forever. I watched the screen as the Sonography kept making things on the heart. I wanted to ask her if everything was okay but didn't because I didn't want to hear her say that something was wrong. After our ultrasound was done, she gave us some pictures and she led us to the doctor's office. We waited and waited and finally the Doctor came in. From his acsent we could tell that he wasn't from the U.S. He started by telling us that the ultrasound showed 5 different concerns. He explained that Lilly's head looked to be shaped like a strawberry and as he said this he drew it on the board. He went on to say that Lilly's hands were still in a fist, that she not only had an enlarged artery but she had a hole in her heart, and she still had 2 cysts on her brain. I was determined not to cry. The doctored looked at me and said that I would either miscarry, Lilly would die during birth, or she would die a few hours after birth. Over all the outcome wasn't good. He went on to explain my options, which were that we could continue on with the pregnancy or we could terinate the pregancy. He told me that if we decided to terminate the pregancy that he and all the other doctors and nurses would support us all the way and then he let us know of all the abortion clincs in different states that would terminate the pregancy. I began to cry. Our decision was easy.. Lilly would live.
